For a child aged roughly 3 to 8, choose a sturdy wooden play house rated 3+, such as the Tender Leaf Dovetail House or the ROBUD Wooden Dollhouse, which comes with its furniture. For a teen or adult who wants to build something, choose a wooden dolls house kit instead: anything from a small first room box to the Spilay Edinburgh Castle or a traditional Greenleaf house you paint yourself.
The two get mixed up because they share the same search. Most "wooden dollhouse kits" sold online are miniature display models, often 1:24 scale and rated 14+, with small parts that make them unsuitable as toys for young children. This guide sorts the two groups first. Each pick then gets the same short spec line: who it suits, size where the listing states it, scale, assembly, and what's included or missing.
We haven't built or played with every house here. Picks are based on what the manufacturer listings specify, plus outside specs where we could find them. Where a listing leaves something out, we say so rather than guess. Many Australian families also look at wall-mounted timber houses, Australian-made pine houses and European brands such as Hape and Drewart, which aren't covered here. For everything we carry, browse our wooden dolls houses.
Wooden dolls house or wooden dolls house kit? Start here
Two quite different products sit under "wooden dolls house".
- Wooden play houses are toys. They're listed for ages 3 and up and built for small hands. The bigger ones stand on the floor, and children fill them with wooden furniture and dolls they move around.
- Wooden dolls house kits are craft projects. You build them piece by piece, often including the tiny furniture, and the finished house sits on a shelf. Most are 1:24 scale and many are rated 14+.
Quick chooser
- For a child under about 8: a play house rated 3+. Skip anything sold as a miniature kit, even if the photos look like a toy.
- For a crafty teen or adult: a kit. Choose by how much building they want, from a small room box to a project lasting several weekends.
- For a parent and child to make together: an unpainted flat-pack house you assemble and decorate as a family.
- Where it will sit: a large play house such as the Dovetail is close to 70 cm tall and wide and needs floor space. The kits here with a listed size finish between about 9 and 24 cm wide, which fits on a shelf.
A note on safety: kits rated 14+ contain small parts and need fiddly assembly. Even finished, they are display pieces, not toys for preschoolers. Our DIY house kit vs ready-made dollhouse guide weighs the two in more depth.

Best wooden dolls houses for kids to play with
All four houses below are listed for ages 3 and up. Check the material line on any listing: some premium children's dollhouses combine solid wood with engineered wood and MDF, so "wooden" doesn't always mean solid timber throughout.
Tender Leaf Dovetail House: best heirloom house
Spec line: ages 3+ Β· about 68 Γ 40 Γ 70 cm (26.8 Γ 15.6 Γ 27.4 in) Β· three storeys, six rooms Β· wood Β· no furniture or accessories included.
The Dovetail House suits families who want a house that lasts years of play and still looks good in a living room. It has hinged front panels, a removable roof panel and a gender-neutral design. Forbes Vetted named it the best-quality pick in its dollhouse roundup. Skip it if you want something ready to play with on the day: furniture is sold separately (see the next section), and it needs floor space.
Le Toy Van Rose Heart: best classic toy-shop brand
Spec line: ages 3+ Β· three storeys Β· wooden Β· heart-motif design, made for girls and boys.
Le Toy Van is a wooden toy name many Australian parents know from toy shops, and the Rose Heart is its three-storey play house. Suits families who want a familiar brand and a pretty, decorative look. Check its dimensions on the listing before you decide where it will go.
KidKraft Majestic Mansion: most play features
Spec line: ages 3+ Β· large house Β· 34-piece accessory set Β· working elevator and garage.
The Majestic Mansion suits children who want lots to do. The elevator and garage add moving parts a static house doesn't have, and the accessory set means it isn't empty on day one.
ROBUD Wooden Dollhouse: best for ages 3β6
Spec line: ages 3β6 Β· wooden Β· furniture included Β· blue.
The ROBUD house is the simplest choice here for the youngest players. Its furniture comes with it, and it's made for regular handling rather than display. Skip it if the child is older than about six, or you want a house that grows into a collector's piece. For more houses aimed at little ones, see our dolls houses for kids.
Furnishing a kids' wooden dolls house
A house that comes without furniture, like the Dovetail, needs a set before play really starts. Wooden furniture that includes a family of figures fills several rooms at once.
- Sumind 35-piece set: the Sumind set has 35 wooden furniture pieces plus 8 family figures, covering a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Listed for ages 3+ at 1:12 scale. Suits a house that needs furnishing and a family in one go.
- ROBUD 23-piece set: ROBUD's furniture set has 23 durable wooden pieces made for pretend play, for ages 3+. Add a doll family if you want figures too.
- yotutun doll family: the yotutun set has nine wood-and-fabric figures: grandparents, parents, children, a cat and a dog. Their arms and legs bend, so they can sit or stand.
Measure before you buy
Children's play houses don't all follow 1:12 scale, and the play house listings here don't state one. So a 1:12 furniture set or doll family isn't guaranteed to fit. Measure a room's ceiling height and the doorways, then compare them with the listed sizes of the furniture and dolls. Doorways matter as much as rooms if children will walk dolls from one space to the next.
Our miniature dollhouse furniture guide covers choosing and fitting furniture. More sets are in dollhouse furniture.
Best wooden dolls house kits to build (teens and adults)
Kits suit teens and adults who enjoy patient, detailed work. They range from a small first room to projects lasting several weekends. This is a short tour; our guide to dollhouse kits for adults goes deeper.
Traditional build-from-scratch: Greenleaf Fairfield and Lily
Spec line: unfinished real wood Β· Fairfield 1:24, Lily 1:12 Β· you paint, wallpaper and furnish it yourself Β· finished size not listed.
Greenleaf is an established name in traditional dolls house building, and these are proper architectural houses rather than themed room scenes. The Fairfield is half scale, so it takes up less room. The Lily is one-inch scale and takes standard 1:12 furniture and accessories. Suits a builder who wants to make a real house to their own taste. Skip them if you want a finished look from the box: painting, wallpapering and furnishing are all up to you.
Family craft project: Pebaro flat-pack house
Spec line: flat-pack plywood Β· self-assembly Β· unpainted Β· furniture included Β· no age rating listed.
The Pebaro house sits between a toy and a kit. It arrives flat and unpainted, so a parent and child can build and decorate it together. The listing also suggests it as a fairy house. With no age rating given, have an adult handle the assembly.
Room kits with a dust cover: CUTEBEE Rose Garden and Cuteefun Boho Dream
Spec line: both 1:24 Β· both with a dust cover Β· Rose Garden adds furniture and a working music movement.
The CUTEBEE Rose Garden is a floral room that doubles as a music box once finished, which makes it an easy gift. Cuteefun's Boho Dream is a bohemian interior the listing aims at adults and teens. It has illustrated English instructions, a fitted dust cover and a 90-day parts warranty, and the components can be rearranged to suit your own layout. More rooms like these are in the CUTEBEE collection.
Long project: GuDoQi Flower Shop
Spec line: ages 14+ Β· about 20β30 hours to build, per the listing Β· music box Β· bagged, numbered parts Β· illustrated English manual.
Almost every piece of furniture in the GuDoQi Flower Shop is made by hand: cut, stitched and glued. That's where the hours go. It suits someone who wants a project lasting several weekends. Skip it as a first kit for a builder who gets frustrated easily.
Showpiece and first kit
Both are in our quick picks above.
- Spilay Edinburgh Castle: for a builder who wants a centrepiece. It finishes at 23.5 Γ 18 Γ 22 cm and 1.5 kg, with all the pictured furniture, LED lights, a music box and a dust cover. Rated 14+. More in the Spilay collection.
- Cuteefun Corner of the Garden: for a first try. Just 9 Γ 9 Γ 11.5 cm finished, with some tools included.
New builders should also read our beginner's guide to DIY miniature houses and how to build a dollhouse kit, step by step.
Scale explained in 60 seconds: 1:12 vs 1:24
1:12, or one-inch scale, means one inch on the model stands for one foot in real life. It's the traditional collector standard. 1:24, or half scale, is half that size, so a 1:24 house takes up much less shelf space.
Most DIY room kits sold online are 1:24 and come with their own furniture, including the Spilay, CUTEBEE and Cuteefun Boho Dream picks. Extra 1:12 furniture is twice the size and won't suit them.
If you plan to add separately bought furniture over the years, a 1:12 house such as the Greenleaf Lily is the better base. For children's play houses, measure rather than assume a scale. The dollhouse scale guide explains 1:12, 1:24 and the smaller scales in full.
What's not in the box (check before you gift)
Several kit listings, including ones from Spilay and Foyucool, say glue and batteries aren't included because they can't be shipped by air.
The Foyucool Retro Loft is a typical example. Its listing includes the furniture, accessories, decorations and a clear English manual, but no glue or batteries, and warns that the build takes some time.
- Glue: keep a small bottle of PVA or craft glue ready.
- Batteries: check which size the lights use and include them with the gift.
- Tools: a few kits include some tools (Corner of the Garden does). Others expect your own craft knife and tweezers.
- Instructions: some listings say English instructions aren't guaranteed. Kits that state an English manual, such as the Spilay castle, GuDoQi and the Cuteefun picks, are safer for a first build.
- Play houses: children's wooden houses may arrive flat-packed and need an adult to assemble them, so allow time before the big day.
Keeping a finished wooden dolls house dust-free
A finished kit gathers dust quickly on an open shelf, and fine details are hard to clean. The Spilay castle, the CUTEBEE Rose Garden and both Cuteefun kits include a cover. For a smaller build that came without one, an acrylic case does the same job.
The Rowood display box is a clear acrylic case sold for miniature house kits, book nooks and 3D puzzles. It's listed at 11.3 Γ 9.3 Γ 9.6 inches (about 29 Γ 24 Γ 24 cm). Measure your finished build, including any battery box at the back, before you choose.
Adding lights
For a kit or house that came without lighting, the Wekuw mini LED lights are a two-pack of warm-white 3V lamps. Each has an AA battery box with a switch and plug-in cables of about 15 cm and 10 cm. According to the listing, they need no soldering, wiring or mains power.

Frequently asked questions
What age is a wooden dolls house suitable for?
The children's play houses in this guide are listed for ages 3+, and the ROBUD house for ages 3β6. DIY miniature kits are generally rated 14+ because of small parts and fiddly assembly. They're display pieces, not toys.
What's the difference between a wooden dolls house and a dolls house kit?
A play house arrives built or flat-packed for straightforward assembly and is made to be handled. A kit is built piece by piece, often including furniture you make yourself, and then displayed. Our DIY kit vs ready-made guide compares the two.
Will 1:12 dolls house furniture fit my wooden dolls house?
Only if the house is 1:12. The Greenleaf Lily is 1:12, while the Greenleaf Fairfield and most room kits are 1:24. Children's play houses don't all follow a standard scale, so measure room and door heights first; the scale guide explains more.
Do wooden dolls house kits come with glue and batteries?
Often not. Several listings leave them out because they can't be shipped by air. Check each listing, as some kits also expect you to supply a craft knife or tweezers.
How long does a wooden dolls house kit take to build?
It varies widely. A small room box like Cuteefun's Corner of the Garden is a beginner-sized project, while the GuDoQi Flower Shop listing puts its build at about 20β30 hours. Traditional Greenleaf houses also need painting and wallpapering on top of the build.
Is a wooden dolls house a good Christmas gift?
Yes: choose a play house rated 3+ for young children and a kit rated 14+ for teens and adults. Some kits ship from overseas, so allow time for delivery. Our Christmas miniature kit gift guide has more ideas.
