A book nook is a small diorama built to slot between books on a shelf, usually showing an alleyway, library or fantasy street with LED lighting so it looks like a lit window into another world.

Most book nooks are about 20–25 cm tall, 10–15 cm wide and 15–20 cm deep. Measure the height clearance under the shelf above and make sure the shelf is at least as deep as the nook, or it will overhang.

Beginner book nooks are often labelled as 3–4 hour builds; standard kits take 6–10 hours and advanced ones longer. The LED wiring step is where most time is lost, so test the lights before closing up the structure.

Almost all use AAA batteries or a USB cable, and many have a touch or sensor switch. Batteries are rarely included, and it is worth checking where the battery box sits if the side of your shelf is visible.
