How dollhouse scale works
A scale is a ratio. At 1:12, one unit on the miniature stands for twelve in real life, so a 2040 mm door becomes 170 mm tall. In imperial terms that's one inch to the foot, which is why 1:12 is also called one-inch scale. 1:24 halves every 1:12 measurement, and 1:48 halves it again.
Checking a piece before you buy
- Measure height, not width. Chairs, doors and people vary less in height, so it's the most reliable check.
- Mixing scales shows. A 1:24 chair in a 1:12 room looks like children's furniture. Within one scale, a few millimetres either way won't be noticed.
- Listings are often vague. If a kit gives only overall dimensions, use "Which scale is it?" with the door or a chair height from the photos.
