Sizes are the usable areas the makers state. A βœ“ means the puzzle lies flat on the surface; "a tight fit" means less than 2 cm to spare on a side.

How big is a 1000-piece puzzle?

Most 1000-piece puzzles finish around 68–70 Γ— 49–51 cm (about 27 Γ— 20 in). Ravensburger, Clementoni, Schmidt and Australian brand Blue Opal all sit in that range; a few gallery-shop puzzles are larger, at about 74 Γ— 58 cm. Large-format 500 and 750-piece puzzles use bigger pieces and finish at roughly the size of a standard 1000.

Choosing a surface

  • Go by the usable area, not the label. A board sold "for 1500 pieces" may not fit every 1500-piece puzzle β€” compare its stated surface with the size on the box.
  • Leave room to sort. Puzzle makers suggest a couple of inches clear on each side, plus space for loose pieces and the box lid.
  • Roll-up mats are the cheapest to store; boards and tables give a rigid, flat surface and often drawers for sorting.
