For a first build, choose a single-room kit with fewer than about 200 pieces, clear illustrated instructions and included LED lighting — it can be finished across a few evenings. Multi-room houses with hundreds of parts are rewarding but are better as a second project once you know you enjoy the hobby.

1:12 is the standard dollhouse scale and has the widest range of compatible furniture and accessories. Many compact DIY room kits are 1:24 or 1:18, which take less shelf space but have fewer add-on pieces available. Decide on a scale before buying extra furniture.

Small room kits usually take 6–12 hours, full houses 20 hours or more. First-time builders should expect roughly one and a half to two times the time printed on the box.

Most adult kits are rated 14+ because they contain very small parts, craft glue and fragile finished pieces. For young children, a sturdy pre-built wooden dollhouse designed for play is the better choice.
