Two Kinds of Beginner Kit
- Amigurumi kits make a small stuffed toy — a snail, a pig, a sloth. They're worked in spiral rounds with a small hook so the fabric is tight. Quick, satisfying and great as gifts.
- Blanket, scarf and bag kits are worked in rows with thicker yarn. Slower, but they teach the basic stitches and you finish with something to use.
What to Look For
| Feature | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Pre-started piece | The tricky first round is already done, so you go straight to the main stitch |
| Video lessons | Seeing the hook move beats any diagram; look for left-handed versions if you need them |
| Thicker yarn in a light, solid colour | Stitches are easier to see and count; dark, variegated or fuzzy yarn hides them |
| Everything in the box | Hook, stuffing, safety eyes, stitch markers and a needle, so you can start straight away |
| Finished size | Smaller toys (8–11 cm) are quicker first projects |
Yarn Weight and Hook Size
The Craft Yarn Council's standard groups yarn by thickness:
| Yarn | Also called | Usual hook |
|---|---|---|
| Light (3) | DK | 4.5–5.5 mm |
| Medium (4) | Worsted, aran | 5.5–6.5 mm |
| Bulky (5) | Chunky | 6.5–9 mm |
Amigurumi kits deliberately use a smaller hook than the chart suggests so the stuffing doesn't show through.
Kits to Start With
- Cookie Box Snail has printed road maps for right- and left-handed crocheters and a video playlist, all in a reusable tin.
- Mewaii kits come pre-started with a firm tape yarn and step-by-step videos.
- Leisure Arts Pablo Pig is a 3-inch pig rated easy.
- folia Sloth is about 9–11 cm, from a German craft brand (instructions may not be in English).
Prefer rows to rounds? The Aeelike chenille blanket kit uses thick, soft yarn that's easy to grip, and the Aeelike starter set gives you nine hooks and yarn to choose your own first pattern.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Counting the slip knot as a stitch.
- Missing the last stitch of a row, so the piece narrows.
- Splitting the yarn with the hook.
- Expecting even tension straight away. It comes with practice — give it a few projects.
When you finish, leave a tail of at least 15 cm and weave it in two directions so it can't work loose.
Safety Eyes and Young Children
Safety eyes aren't recommended for toys given to children under three. Embroider the eyes instead for a baby's toy.

Frequently asked questions
What's the easiest crochet kit for a complete beginner?
A small amigurumi kit with video lessons and a pre-started piece, so the hardest first round is done for you — or a blanket kit in thick yarn if you'd rather work in rows. Light, solid-coloured yarn makes stitches easier to see.
Is a crochet hook included in kits?
Not always. Most beginner amigurumi kits include one, but some yarn-and-pattern kits treat the hook as an extra. Check the listing.
How long does a first amigurumi take?
Usually a few hours to a couple of evenings — The Woobles, for example, puts a first plush at 3–8 hours.
Are crochet toys with safety eyes safe for babies?
Safety eyes aren't recommended for children under three because they can be a choking hazard. For a baby's toy, embroider the eyes instead.
What yarn and hook should a beginner use?
Without a kit, a medium (worsted or aran) yarn in a light, solid colour with a 5–5.5 mm hook is the usual starting point. Amigurumi kits use a smaller hook than the yarn suggests to make a tight fabric.
